IMRAD Format of a Scientific Paper

There is a convention for what verb forms are used in each section of paper. The introduction tells what has been previously published in literature and why the study was done: the verbs are usually in the present tense.
The Material and Methods section describes how the study was conducted: the verbs are in past tense. The Results section summarizes was found: the verbs are in past tense. Finally, the Discussion explains the results and is customarily written in the present tense
